In 1948 Lyndon Johnson campaigned in a Sikorsky S-51. His pilot had never flown a helicopter before. He flew to Dublin and other small towns across Texas to shake hands and eventually won the election. Johnson would later help Dublin get a housing project. He was one of the first politicians to campaign by helicopter. Johnson was behind in the polls and needed something unusual to get people’s attention and to shake as many hands as possible.
