This group of students above was probably on a fund raising trip, harvesting pecans with the cane poles. Comyn was one of the first schools in Texas to have motorized school buses. Motorized buses allowed the State of Texas to close smaller schools and send students to schools with better facilities. Back at the turn of the century, there were a number of small schools in communities outside of Dublin. In a recent conversation with Mac McKinnon, he said that schools tended to be about 5 miles apart.
This was so students wouldn’t have to walk more than 2 1/2 miles to get to school.

The Stephenville Masonic Lodge #267 is hosting a blood drive on Saturday, Sept. 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the lodge (244 S. Columbia, Stephenville).
The blood drive will be conducted by Carter BloodCare.

Dublin area invited to rally for Rylan

The Dublin community is invited to rally around the Comanche courthouse on Saturday, Sept. 25 in support of 5-year-old Dubliner Rylan Pruitt, who is battling a rare form of brain cancer.
The event will take place near the Stone Eagle beer garden in Comanche from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Standing for the Fallen

Robert Kellar, a 20-year founding member of the Lingleville Volunteer Fire Department, chose to honor the 343 brave firefighters of the New York fire departments who died in responding to the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks by standing for 343 minutes in silence in front of the LVFD station.
