Lions cut teeth for District

“Close, but no cigar,” said Dublin Lions head boys basketball coach Wes Grisham of the of the 57-53 away loss against Axtell on Dec. 5.

“We had them on the ropes then lost the lead and didn’t get it back until late in the 4th quarter,” he continued. “They managed to knock down some freethrows to take the lead and the clock wasn’t on our side.”

The coach said the game offered the Lions a chance to see what they need to work on as they head into district play.

“I think we will see a lot of close games this year and need to capitalize on them, “ Grisham said.

Brady Tournament The Lions went 1-3 in tournament play at Brady Dec. 7-9.

Dublin began with a 79-40 loss to Eldorado.

Dublin 40 vs Eldorado 79 “We had some really good looks but the ball wouldn’t fall in,” said Grisham adding that their opponent didn’t miss. “We had some good offense rolling but couldn’t buy a bucket and Eldorado had all the luck.”

Dublin scoring included: Gaitan 13 Gilman 8 Jones 7 Teten 7 Hernandez 3 Lewis 2 Dublin rebounded with a high scoring 70-69 win against Brady.

“This was a fun game,” said Grisham.”Our guys competed and were knocking down shots and shooting with confidence. We came back to win it and you could tell we were all together for this win.”

Dublin Scoring included: Teten 27 Gaitan 15 Hernandez 10 Gilman 5 Jones 4 Aiden Salyer 3 Ivie 3 Lewis 1 Garcia 1 Dublin then took the fight to San Saba, falling 64- 47.

“We tried to get some different looks and recovery from a physical game after Brady,” Grisham reported. “It was a close game and we had our pressure defense setting the tone.”

Grisham said the game was decided in the fourth as the Lions lost some energy and San Saba capitalized on it.

Dublin scoring included: Gaitan 26 Hernandez 6 Garcia 5 Gilman 5 Jones 3 Lewis 2 Dublin ended tourney play with a 62-57 loss against Blanco.

Grisham said this game was decided as Dublin missed some key shots. Although Dublin defense stopped a power player from getting the ball, the Lions were hampered by turnovers and some end of tournament Turnovers hurt us and it’s probably from exhaustion being the last game of the tournament. Our pressure defense helped stop their big guy from getting the ball but we just didn’t make some easy baskets.
