The Dublin Lions ended the 2021-22 season as Area Champions when they fell to the Gunter Tigers 62-20.
This score marked the most any opponent has scored against the 13-0 Gunter all season.
“Gunter is a very good team,” said Dublin Head Football Coach Greg Hardcastle. “I expect them to be playing for a state championship in a few weeks.”
The coach was proud of his team for battling hard and taking the fight to their undefeated rival, showing a determination that resulted in this year’s squad being the first football team in school history to make it three games deep into the playoff schedule and be crowned Area Champs.
This well-exceeded Hardcastle’s initial goal for the season.
“Our First goal every season is we want to make playoffs,” he said. “As you get to playoffs, you start looking at one week at a time.”
Hardcastle expressed pride in this year’s pride and wished his 18 seniors the best in whatever life has in store for them.
He cited players like Chris Teten and Cooper Pickett as athletes who will be able to pick up the torch in leadership roles next season while younger players will work on speed and experience.
Hardcastle thank the community, Dublin ISD administration and the Dublin Athletic Booster Club for their support all season and also praised his coaching staff for all their hard work.
