Lingleville JV and Varsity Lady Cardinals faced a week of battle on the volleyball court Aug. 12-17 with the JV girls claiming top honors at the Strawn tournament Aug. 16.

Head Lingleville volleyball coach Brandon Haught reported the JV girls only dropped two sets in five games when they first faced Dublin.

The JV girls bested Ranger and Rochelle in 2-0 wins before the Dublin match, which was claimed by the JV Lady Lions 2-1. The Lady Cards followed with another 2-0 win over Strawn and claimed a 2-0 victory over Dublin in their day ending rematch.

“Alexa Aviles was a standout player for us in the tournament, being a great leader on the court throughout the day,” said Haught. “They are improving very quickly, and we’re super excited for them. [JV] Coach Lauren Wilson is doing an incredible job with this group!”

This tournament appearance followed Aug. 13 games at Garner, where the JV Lady Cards lost in two sets and the Lingleville varsity fell 3-0 to the home team.

Lingleville standouts in the Garner game were Maira Hernandez who had 4 digs and Dylan Gibson who completed 4 kills.

“Varsity faced a bit of adversity all week,” said Haught. “Garner is a very talented team, but we learned a lot from it, and we saw what needs fixing. We dealt with some injuries during the tournament, but still got plenty of experience that will help us going forward.”

On Thursday, the Lingleville varsity scored a 2-0 win against Santo but didn’t clinch a set against Dublin, Rochelle or Strawn. The Lady Cards fared better Saturday, Aug. 17 as they scored another 2-0 victory over Santo and claimed sets in 2-1 losses to Rising Star and Dublin. They ended the tourney with a 2-0 bow to Dublin.
