Lady Lions fight in Holiday Classic

The Lady Lions went 0-4 at the Brownwood Holiday Classic tournament.

“Although we didn’t win, the girls finished better than we started out,” said head Dublin girls basketball coach Kim Perez. “[On Dec. 28,] we played Goldthwaite and lost 60-50. The girls found their legs towards the end of the game.”

During that first game, Gabby Herrera had 28 points, NavaLee White had 5 and Jaiden Harrell, Madilyn Loper, and Olivia Salyer each chipped in 4. Emma Vargas added 3, and Libby Turner had 2.

The Lady Lions faced Abilene Cooper in their second game and fell 70-30.

“They were a very solid team,” Perez said of Abilene. “We couldn’t get any shots to fall.”

Vargas led Dublin scoring with 7, Herrera had 6, Chapa had 5, and White had 2.

On Dec. 29, the Lady Lions played Valley Mills.

“We were up several times during this game,” said Perez. “We lost our lead in the 3rd [quarter] and stopped moving our feet. Then, we got outscored in the 4th 8-23.”

Dublin lost 62-53. Herrera led scoring in the third game with 24 points, Turner had 8, Harrell had 7, White added 6, Loper put up 3, and Madison Turley, Salyer, and Vargas each had 1.

Dublin’s last game was against Coleman.

Perez said the team put up a better effort in the final game but missed some opportunities.

Turley led scoring in the final game with 11 points. SierraChapa had 9, Herrera had 6, White put up 5, and Turner and Vargas each had 4, and Loper with 2.

“This was a good tournament for us because we got to see different teams as we get right back to district play,” said Perez.
