I was so proud of my boy. When our son, Jeremy, was old enough to join the band and choose an instrument, he chose the trumpet. We went through the period of squawks and squeaks that drove our patience to the limits, but after a while it started to sound much better.

Being a kid in the South required being able to speak Mom.For example: “We’re you raised in a barn?” didn’t actually mean, “We’re you raised in a barn?” (Although, it could mean that for some of my ancestors from Dardanelle.) The phrase was usually uttered when you left a door open.

In the late spring or early fall, there was no air conditioning in Dublin High School, so every window and door was open. It was during a warm day in 1949 that a dog that probably didn’t have a home, wandered into the building.
