Gene Gilbreath passed away Tuesday, November 16, 2021, at the Three Oaks Retirement Center in Dublin, Texas. He was 95 years old. Visitation will be during Funeral Home business hours 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Services will be held in Dublin at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, November 20th at the Harrell Funeral Home Chapel with Dean Bradley and Jim Clifton officiating. Interment will follow at the Barbee Cemetery under the direction of Harrell Funeral Home.

Gene was born November 3, 1926, in Edna Hill, Texas to Gustine and Kate Gilbreath. He lived and attended school in Edna Hill graduating from Proctor High School. He married Maxine Cook on November 3, 1945. They were married for sixty-six years until her death in 2011.

Gene was a cattleman, dairyman, and rancher in the Edna Hill community for his entire life. He and Maxine worked to build a fine dairy herd, and later a fine herd of Brangus cattle. He enjoyed being outside with his cattle and horses. In 1970, the Gilbreath family was selected as the FHA Texas Farm Family of the Year. Gene also gave much of his time to the Upper Leon Soil Conservation District as a director and chairman for fourteen years. He was also a member of the Erath County Electric Cooperative (later United Co-op) were he served as a board member and chairman for many years. Besides civic responsibilities, he was a member and served as a deacon in the Baptist Church and served many years on the board of the Barbee Cemetery Association.

Gene is survived by his son, David Gilbreath, and brother Harrell Gilbreath, along with many nieces and nephews who have memories of spending time at the ranch with Uncle Gene and Aunt Maxine. He is preceded in death by his wife, Maxine, his parents, and sisters Loree Gilbreath Miller, Virginia Gilbreath, and brother Tad Gilbreath.
