Aug. 31, 1923 A good sized crowd enjoyed a snappy game Wednesday afternoon between the Lions’ Club and the Post Office boys. The Lions won the decision by a score of 9 to 8.
The game netted $15.00 which goes to the foot ball team. An additional $35.00 has to be raised to send the boys to training camp. Just make up your mind to help out; the committee will come see you. We want a winning foot ball team; help us get it.

Aug. 30, 1973 A new disease has been identified in Erath County peanut fields. Dr. Thomas A. Lee, Jr., Area Plant Pathologist with the Extension Service, last week found web blotch is a disease caused by the fungus Ascochyta. This is the first time that the disease has been identified in the county this year.
The disease was found on peanuts between Dublin and DeLeon, also north of De Leon. Infection levels were very low in both cases and did not appear to be causing severe losses.
The disease is characterized by irregular circular splotches on the leaves. The color varies from light brown to dark gray and appears as a fine web, especially in the early stage of infection. In South Texas where the disease is wide spread, it can yellow the leaves and defoliate large areas of fields. This disease should not be confused with the scorched appearance on the lower leaves of much of this year’s crop. This problem is thought to be a physiological or environmental burn of some type and not a disease.

The Saturday yard sale under the big tent at Patrick and Blackjack is a last ditch fund-raising effort to save The Corner Lot.
Dubbed “The Last Stand”, the event will be the final organized project to raise enough money to purchase the lot from owner David Stokes of Stephenville.
Members of The Corner Lot Gang gave themselves 60 days to raise enough pledges and donations to purchase the lot – a goal of $50,000. As of now, they are slightly over halfway to that goal. Whatever they are able to raise by Aug. 31 will be offered to Stokes.
The community has been asked to make donations of “good stuff” to the sale. Donated items can be brought to the corner Friday.
