An election was scheduled in July 1891 to see if the county seat and the new courthouse could be built in Dublin. While most in Dublin supported building it here, the county as a whole preferred to keep it in Stephenville.

The Erath County Courthouse in Stephenville was built in 1856 and burned in 1866. A second courthouse made of rock was built in 1887. The second one was replaced beginning in 1891.
