Comanche County Pecan Show

Body

All of us at the Comanche County Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Office want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and thank you for your continued support this past year.

We are a stakeholder backed program and could not function without the support of not only our County Commissioners Court, but also our many volunteers and sponsors. We appreciate all the support we receive from the community for our 4-H, Family and Consumer Sciences, and Agriculture programming. We look forward to working with all the good folks in Comanche County in 2024.

This will go down as the lowest number of entries we have ever had at the local pecan show and with good reason. Two years of drought (and this year was the worst of the two) has really hammered pecan production in the county.

However, we did get in some good quality entries and were able to have a pecan show.

Classic and New Division: Unfortunately, we only had one entry this year in the Classic and New Division. A very nice Cape Fear from Sorrells Farms was entered with 47 nuts/ pound and 52% kernelthis entry was also the Overall Champion of the Show.

Commercial Division: Our 1st place Cheyenne was entered by Sorrells Farms and had 47 nuts/ pound and a 53% kernel.

In 2nd place, W.T. Harris entered a Cheyenne and had 44 nuts/pound and 50% kernel.

The courthouse had the 3rd place Cheyenne with 64 nuts/pound and 50% kernel. The Sorrells Farms’ entry was the Grand Champion of the Commercial Division.

Our top two Kanza entries included: 1st place from Sorrells Farms had 67 nuts/pound and 51% kernel and 2nd place entered by Darell French had 78 nuts/pound and 48% kernel.

We only had one Kiowa from Sorrells Farms that had 43 nuts/pound and 55 % kernel.

From our Pawnees, Sorrells Farms had the 1st place nut with 42 nuts/ pound and 54% kernel and Kline Jones had the 2nd place nut with 51 nuts/ pound and 35% kernel.

Our top Wichita nuts were from Sorrells Farms with 48 nuts/pound and 55 % kernel and Tommy Elliot with 54 nuts/pound and 56% kernel.

Native Division: As one might expect there were almost no natives this year, so we are lucky to have had one entry. Sorrells Farms had the Grand Champion Native with 85 nuts/lb. and 45% kernel.

Pecan producers are having a really rough yearnot only have they had to deal with the extremely harsh drought and heat, but prices are extremely low and as everyone knows inputs are still very high. Please go out and buy some good Comanche County grown pecans (be sure to ask for county grown pecans). Pecans are great for the holidays and make a wonderful present.
