Alleged horse thief arrested

An alleged horse thief has been arrested in Erath County after an investigation was recently completed by the Erath County Sheriff’s Office as well as the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association.

According to information released by Erath County Sheriff Matt Coates, on Sunday, Aug. 6 law enforcement was called to the 9000 block of Farm-to-Market 847 for report of a horse that had been stolen sometime overnight.

Deputies and investigators from the sheriff’s office and the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association immediately began their investigation.

Within hours, the horse was located in a barn several miles from the residence where it was stolen. Upon recovery the horse was quickly returned to its rightful owner. Through subsequent investigation a suspect was identified and questioned. On Tuesday, Aug. 8, a warrant for that suspect, Curtis Clayburn Garrison, was obtained and served at an address on County Road 177. Garrison was arrested and transported to the Erath County Jail on the charge of Theft of Cattle/Horse/Exotic Livestock less than $150,000, a Third Degree felony.

Garrison has been arrested on many charges in the past including evading arrest detention, deadly discharge of a firearm, unlawfully carrying a weapon, criminal mischief and assorted drug charges. According to jail information, he has been arrested 24 times since 2017. He was held on a $65,000 bond at the Erath County Jail until Aug. 9 when he bailed out of jail.
