The De Leon Area Historical Society has taken onthechallengeof preserving the old train depot in De Leon.
This is a large task, considering the use of the depot came to an end in the 1970’s. It is in considerable disrepair and needs attention to preserve a large part of the history of the area.
The purpose of preserving the depot is for it to house the history of the depot and the history of De Leon and the surrounding area.
DeLeon grew after the arrival of the railroad with the selling of lots and a the town beginning to populate.
The museum is now housed in the old W. H. Smith/Jim Frank Appliance building.
If you have not ventured into the museum, come and visit. The content of the museum contains history of all the old community schools, basketball/football teams, World War I and II area memorabilia, historical quilts, antique farm equipment, a player piano, art collection, books by authors from the area, and of course, Elvis Presley’s visit to Hodges Park in the 1950’s.
