Citizens better flip their remaining pages in a hurry as the deadline to turn in reading logs for the Dublin Public Library’s Summer Program is this Saturday.

All reading logs must be turned in by 2 p.m. Saturday, July 22.

The Summer Reading Club is open to kids and adults alike and participants receive one raffle ticket for each chapter book they read or listen to, or one ticket for every 10 picture books that young readers consume.

Tickets are then used in a drawing for: Rangers tickets, a Nintendo Switch, Apple Airpods, a karaoke microphone, a light up frisbee or a content creator package. The drawing will be held at 2:05 p.m. Saturday, July 22.

In addition to the raffle tickets, each reader gets to choose three free books from the library’s “book fair” and three small prizes.

The library has spent time this summer organizing grab-and-go crafts for eager readers and hosting a slew of programs.

“We are so grateful for all the people and organizations that pitch in to make the Summer Reading Program fun for the community. The summer has flown by!” Library Director Adina Dunn said.

Summer Reading Programs throughout the state and nation are organized as a way to combat “summer slide,” a term used to describe learning loss for kids.

Students who read in the summer gain an average of one month of reading proficiency while students who don’t read lose an average of twothree months proficiency, and over time those months add up to years, according to booksourcebanter. com.

As Summer Reading Club winds down, the library and local volunteers are gearing up for the annual Back-to-School Fair which will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 29 at the library.

Donations are being sought for the event including backpacks, basic hygiene items, new socks and undergarments and donations to purchase hair cut gift cards.

“If you would like to help you could donate school supplies, backpacks, or new socks and undies at the library,” Library Director Adina Dunn said. All donations are due by Friday, July 28.

There will be a variety of give-a-ways at the event including back packs, gift cards, basic hygiene items and children’s books. All items are first come first serve and a child must be present in order to receive the give-a-ways.

There will also be free hot dogs and ice cream, a foam machine and a touch-a-truck experience.

Registration for the event will begin at 11 a.m., basic hygiene items will be given away at 11 a.m., ice cream and hot dogs are being served starting at 11:30 a.m. and at noon, the backpacks will be given away.

Limited school supplies will be available since Dublin ISD is providing all needed school supplies for all students.

Volunteers are also needed at the event and prior to the event. Those wanting to volunteer can call 254- 4454141.

“I want to thank everyone for their kindness and support for this event. The main goal is to help the kids go back to school with confidence and be ready to learn,” Dunn said.
