Boy Scouts launch drive for kicks

Dublin Boy Scout Troop 30 is asking locals to dig into their closet instead of their pockets with a new fundraiser befitting their trip to camp and merit badge fees.

This is because they have partnered with GotSneakers for a fundraiser in which the troop will earn funds for every pair of gently worn, used and new sneakers collected.

GotSneakers provides funds for the shoes as part of its recycling program designed to keep sneakers out of landfills to limit their harmful effectsonourenvironment while helping organizations like the Boy Scouts raise much needed funds.

According to GotSneakers’s website, most people throw away their used sneakers every 125-200 days. The site claims that the shoes, made of nonbiodegradable materials, add toxic chemicals to air and soil as they remain in landfillsorareincinerated. It also states that the process of manufacturing sneakers can lead to air pollution.

“Recycling and reusing sneakers keeps sneakers out of landfills, reduces the need for manufacturing new shoes and sneakers, and supports a growing circular economy,” reports the site in its mission.

Since its foundation, GotSneakers has led to the recycle and reuse of 2.5 million pairs of shoes.

“We are excited about our sneaker drive fundraiser,” said Lori Beggs, Fundraising chair. “We know that most people have extra sneakers in their closets they would like to donate rather than throw away. By doing so, we raise money for the scouts and help the environment. It’s a win – win for everyone!”
