Scarecrow contest now underway

Dublin Public Library is inviting the community to join in the fall spirit with a Build Your Own Scarecrow contest benefitting the local library.

The cost is $50 for businesses and $25 for residents to enter. Deadline to register has been extended until Oct. 7 and all scarecrows must be displayed by Oct. 17.

The fundraiser will help the library in purchasing books, technology and other supplies that aid in its services, outreach and programs.

Those entering are reminded the contest is intended to be familyfriendly so decorate accordingly.

Displays must be visible from a city, county or state roadway. Displays must be located on private property by permission of landowner and should not limit vehicle visibility or in any way to obstruct traffic. The highway/ road right-of-way must be observed and not infringed upon.

Those participating will take a picture which can be emailed to staff@dublinlibrary.org to load into a Facebook album where votes will be taken for fan favorties.

All pictures need to be submitted by Oct. 24. Winners will be announced on Monday, Oct. 31. For more information, visit the library at 206 W. Blackjack or call (254) 445-4141.

Nature Fest set Oct. 8 in Stephenville

“Bluebirds across Texas— one nestbox at a time!” is motto of the Texas Bluebird Society. Nestboxes and information for success with Eastern Bluebirds will be available at Nature Fest on Oct. 8.

Nature Fest is an educational event presented by the Prairie Oaks Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalist program.

It will be held at the Bosque River Trail Nature Center located in Stephenville, Texas at 735 East Long Street, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Springer hosting town hall in Stephenville

State Senator Drew Springer (SD-30) will be hosting a town hall meeting for Erath County set for Tuesday, Oct. 11 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. It will be held at the club suite at Tarleton’s Memorial Stadium (501 N. Harbin, Stephenville).

“Listening is one of the most important parts of my job. And being face-to-face with those that I have the pleasure to serve and represent in Austin is the best place to get the direction I need,”Springer stated. “The next Legislative Session is only four months away. Taking government to the people and taking questions and direction on issues important to the people of SD 30 is something that I look forward to. These meetings will help me develop not only my legislative agenda, but policy positions on a number of policy areas. I always learn a great deal and look forward to hearing from people all across SD 30.”

Tarleton Jazz Ensemble performing tonight

The Tarleton State University Department of Performing Arts will present a concert by Tarleton’s Jazz Ensemble 1 at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, in the auditorium of the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center.

Under the direction of Andrew Stonerock, the Jazz Ensemble and student vocalists from Tarleton choirs will perform pieces by Count Basie, Charles Mingus, Matt Catingub and John Clayton.

Admission is $5, or free with a Tarleton ID.

Tarleton choirs join for season’s first concert Friday

Tarleton State University’s Chamber Choir, Texan Harmony and Texan Riders will come together at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, in the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center Theater to present their first concert of the semester.

Singers will perform works by André Thomas, Joni Jensen, William Dawson, Rollo Dilworth and Eric Whitacre, among others. Selections will include “Will the Circle be Unbroken,” “America the Beautiful” and “El Vito.”

The performance will feature student conductors Caitlin Hoffman, Maxwell Tindall and London Pinder.

Tickets are $5, or free with Tarleton ID.
