There are a couple of excellent programs coming up in the next couple of weeks.

Tri-County Cattle Gathering If you have liquidated a portion or all of your herd, it might be a good time to build some new fences. Proper fence bracing and design is key to the effectiveness and longevity of your fence. Another big issue for new fencing is keeping them clean, brush encroachment on fences and range in general is costly. It is amazing how quickly brush will grow up on a fence row and then begin to widen into the field. It is not unusual to lose several acres of field to just brush encroachment on fence lines.

The late rains helped the grass recover somewhat, but you could sure see a difference in somefields. Iam confident next year’s grass growing season will be a good one with plenty of moisture, we will need it to make-up hay supplies and for fields to completely recover. You are going to want to have your soils in shape and ready to take advantage of next year’s moisture. Finally, what will the agriculture economy look like in a year? We will have great experts on-hand to talk about and provide knowledge on all these topics at the Tri-County Cattle Gathering.

This year’s program will be held on Friday, Oct. 7 at M&P Brangus Ranch near Carlton. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m. and the program will run from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. We will be offering 1 IPM CEU. Local sponsors will be covering the cost of the program and meal. Please RSVP to the Comanche County Agents office: 325-3562539.

Southwest Dairy Day This year’s Southwest Dairy Day will be held in Scotland, Texas that is on Thursday, October 20th. The day will be beginning at 8 a.m. and run until 4 p.m. and the KC Hall will be the primary location for events. Tours will be held at Hemmi Dairy, Vieth Dairy and Wolf’s Legendairy.
