Although Weldon Whitehead retired as a Dublin FFA teacher in 2003, he was honored at the Agriculture Teachers Association of Texas (ATAT) Professional Development Conference July 1924 with his induction into the Ag Teacher Hall of Fame.
“It was really a surprise,” Whitehead said of the honor, who admitted he didn’t know the award existed. “I’ve been out of teaching for a long time.”
Whitehead was called by Don Hudson, a Dublin native who recommended him for the title.
“I didn’t know what he was talking about,” he said. “I’m really honored.”
Whitehead taught for 42 years before his retirement. “I taught all those years for the kids,” he said. “I never really thought about any award for me.”
Whitehead led two national judging teams in his career as well as several who placed high, but he said his greatest accomplishment is seeing what his former students have done since graduation.
“I wanted to prepare them for life, not just agriculture, and help them be a contributing member of society,” he said.
His dedication is still remembered to this day as the DHS agriculture building is named in honor of him and fellow former ag teacher, Danny Prater. One statistic widely cited when he retired was that Whitehead drove 50,000 miles every year in taking students to events, highlighting the time and effort he put into their success.
When he retired in 2003, he was also presented a state award and Honorary Life Award from the Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association of Texas before it was changed to the ATAT. More than 20 years later, he received this distinction to add to those, a testament to the impact that he’s had on his students’ lives.
“Through Mr. Whitehead’s unwavering dedication, deep knowledge, and genuine care for young people, he has helped shape generations of leaders while leaving an enduring mark on the Dublin community,” said Dublin ISD superintendent Melissa Summers. “His induction into the Agriculture Teachers Association of Texas Hall of Fame is a well-deserved recognition of a lifetime devoted to education, service, and excellence. We are incredibly proud of Mr. Whitehead and grateful for the lasting legacy he has created. Congratulations on this distinguished and richly deserved honor!”
