The Woman’s Thursday Club of Dublin kicked off our next two year study with a President’s Luncheon honoring our new President, Denise Weems. We will study the signers of the U.S. Constitution. These were brave men who knew if caught by the British they would be punished as traitors. Our guest speaker, Ben Pate, gave us an overview of the Declaration of Independence document and the U.S. Constitution document. This started with the Boston Tea Party. Colonist felt they had heavy taxation without representation. Therefore, they thru the tea in the harbor. The British responded by closing the Boston Harbor. This created even more struggles for the colonist. Therefore, they penned the Declaration of Independence, signed and sent to England. They immediately started creating the U.S. Constitution. After much discussion and changes we have a Constitution that has served us for 250 years. These were brave and insightful men and we owe them much, by protecting the principles they established.
We were honored to have our club’s Texas President, Novella Byrd join us. Also joining us was Sylvia Burleson, our President Denise’s guest. Sylvia’s husband, Eric, was a volunteer firefighter and director of Air Evac. Eric died in 2022 from PFAS related cancer that impacts too many firefighters. One of the main issues are the carcinogenic nature of their fire suits. Our special service project for the next two year cycle will be focused on our Dublin Volunteer Firefighters and their various needs. We owe our firefighters a lot for always being there to keep us safe and protect our properties.
