Controlling Grassburs and FUNdamentals of Lawn Care
Erath County Master Gardeners (ECMG) is kicking off its 2026 Adventures in Gardening program with a class on controlling grassburs and tackling other lawn maintenance tasks. Saturday, February 28, Dr. Hennen Cummings, AgriLife Wildlife and Natural Resources, will leverage his in-depth knowledge of turfgrass management to explain field-proven lawncare practices developed by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. Class topics include:
■ Selecting and planting grasses best suited to Erath County
■ Mowing do’s and don’t’s
■ When to fertilize and which fertilizers to use
■ Irrigation practices
■ Weed control with herbicides
■ Controlling fire ants and other pests According to Alice Anne Brown, president of ECMG’s executive committee, “Dr. Cummings is an expert in strategies for minimizing weeds in turfgrass and creating healthy lawns. Weed control, especially when it comes to grassburs, is one of the most frequently asked questions we master gardeners hear. In the February 28th class, Dr. Cummings will provide answers to many of those questions.”
