Corn Silage Turn-Row Meeting and Pecan Scouting Workshop

We have a couple of good meetings coming up in the county in the next two weeks. Both offer CEU’s and some good training.

Corn Silage Turn-Row Meeting Once again, this year we have worked with local seed distributors and have an excellent set of corn silage trials. We will be offering a turnrow meeting at the trial location on Thursday, June 19th at 6 p.m. at the Hoekman Dairy. We will have seed representatives discussing their various hybrids. We will have Dr. Kerns talking about root-worm research and control, and an update on the corn leaf hopper. This will be an excellent program with topics of interest to all our corn silage growers in the county and we will also be offering 2 IPM CEU’s.

Pecan Integrated Pest Management & Scouting Workshop The new Pecan IPM specialist Kyle Slusher has put together a good pecan workshop with a focus on IPM. Here are some of the topics that will be covered:

■ Tips and tools for scouting and monitoring major pecan insect pests

■ Tips for disease scouting, identification, and management

■ Troubleshooting and managing stress in pecan trees

■ Reading pesticide labels and understanding the importance of IRAC and FRAC

■ Crop load estimation and evaluation for IPM decisions

■ Online demonstration of the Pecan IPM and ARC Farm Intelligence Tools

The program will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 25 at the Cullers Farms Orchard. The orchard is located at 5680 FM 2318, Comanche, TX, 76442. There will be 5 total CEU’s- 1 L&R, 2 General, and 2 IPM.

The registration fee is $30.00 and lunch will be provided. To register, call Kyle Slusher at 859-242-2782 or you can call the Comanche County Extension office at (325)-356-2539. If you are interested in or grow pecans his will be an excellent program.
