Greetings! I am back again writing for my favorite newspaper, this time sharing my journey into the world of decisions we must make as we age. Like many others, that AARP membership arriving in the mail hurt a bit … but I believe knowing what our options are as we age makes theprocess far less daunting.
So that is why I will be writing this column “Aging Matters”.
Let’s start with that first indicator that we were entering our older years. What was your first indicator that the young pups considered you elderly?
I think for me it was when I read an “news” article online that referred to the “elderly man” interviewed for the story. The 51-yearold gentleman in question probably never knew he would be identified online in such a manner. The personal affront to me, on his behalf, was intense.
It’s funny how aging is such a tender subject. We should look forward to the freedom offered by aging. The license to act as we wish, say what we believe, choose where to go and what to do are all enticements associated with getting older. Instead, we fear the sickness, loneliness and lessening of capabilities. Let us together educate ourselves about what the future may hold in store.
I recently accepted a new job which puts me into daily contact with folks older than I. I am also blessed to be able to learn a great deal about options for seniors. So, with your permission and reading, I hope to teach you what I’m learning. Along the way, I hope you will reach out to me and share with me what you learn or are interested in learning about.
In my next column, I will discuss the various decisions facing seniors about where they will choose to live.
