Dairy Outreach Program Area
To support the dairy industry in the county, the Comanche, Erath, and Hamilton county Dairy Committees and Texas AgriLife Extension offices will be hosting a Dairy Outreach Program Area (DOPA) and Nutrient Management Program at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research Station located in Stephenville, on Tuesday August 6th. Registration for the morning session will be at 9:30 AM and the program will run from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM. The morning session topics will include Riley Hillard from the Comanche Electric Cooperative covering “Feasibility and Economics of Solar Panels on Central Texas Dairies” and Scott Nolte, Extension Specialist discussing “Manure to Compost, Weed Control Residuals.”
Following lunch, the second session will begin back at 1:00 PM with Dr. Zong Liu Extension Specialist covering “Digesters, Mortality Management, and Climate Smart Program Enrollment,” Dr. Douphrate, Extension Specialist covering “Biosecurity,” and our last speaker of the day will be Darren Turley, Executive Director, Texas Association of Dairymen giving us an update on all industry news and its effect on Central Texas producers.
Two DOPA continuing education credits will be offered for the morning session and three credits will be offered for the afternoon session. Lunch will be provided by our excellent dairy and agriculture sponsors, and we will adjourn at approximately 4:00 PM. If possible, please RSVP to your local county agent’s office.
Late-Season Pecan Program
The Comanche County Pecan Committee and the Comanche County AgriLife Extension office will be hosting a Late-Season Pecan Production Program on Tuesday, August 13th at the Deleon City Auditorium. Registration will start at 9:30 a.m. and the meeting will run from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.
This year we have some excellent speakers covering topics that are of concern to Comanche County producers. Dr. Larry Stein, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Department Head of Horticulture will be discussing “Late Season Management and Tree Health,” and our new Extension Entomologist, Kyle Slusher will be talking about managing weevils, aphids, and other late season pests.
We will be offering 1 IPM CEU and the meal will be paid for by our great local sponsors.
Dairy Animal Handling Certificate Training Comanche, Erath, and Hamilton counties will be offering a dairy worker training on Tuesday, August 20th from 12:00 PM until 4:00 PM at the Texas A&M Research Station in Stephenville. The training will be offered in English and Spanish and will cover dairy biosecurity, milking procedures, and parlor efficiency and management. There is no charge for the program and lunch will be provided by Zoetis. Attendees will receive 3 Dairy Animal Handling Certificate education hours. Groundskeeper Training The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension office in Comanche County will be offering a “Groundskeeper Program” on Tuesday, August 27th from noon until 4:00 PM at the Comanche Community Center. The program will cover pesticide laws & regulations, recordkeeping and license requirements, right-away maintenance and herbicide products, and tree trimming and management. The program will offer 2 CEU’s- 1 L&R and 1 IPM. There is no charge and lunch will be provided by our good local sponsors.
