Meals On Wheels of Erath County (MOWEC) has announced the ‘Friendly Visitors Program’ to enhance the quality of life for seniors in Erath County by providing social interaction and emotional support.

MOWEC Executive Director Elizabeth Johnson reported that the organization has been implementing the program for several months and it has proven very popular with both seniors and volunteers, who make a new friend through the pairing.

“We debated starting a new program in the middle of a pandemic, but we knew we could do it safely,” said Johnson. “Seniors have a shrinking social circle. This lets them meet and talk with somebody with similar interests and stay connected with the community.”

The new program works by having Meals On Wheels staff match volunteers to a homebound or isolated senior with similar interests.

The senior (age 60 or above) is not required to be on meal services to participate in the Friendly Visitors Program. This program can help reduce the negative health effects associated with isolation and loneliness and improves the overall well– being of seniors in the community.

Visits by volunteers are social in nature and Volunteers will not be expected to do errands, housework or drive the senior around.

Friendly Visitor volunteers must: be 18 years of age

offer a one-year commitment;

complete an application

and consent to a background check - provided by Meals On Wheels.

Additionally, Friendly Visitor volunteers receive volunteer training which provides the information and tools needed to be successful.

“During these uncertain times we want to take every precaution necessary,” MoWEC said in a press release. “Meals On Wheels encourages all volunteers to practice social distancing or to communicate via phone calls. Meals On Wheels looks forward to helping seniors build lasting friendships in our community.”

This new program is one of the many ways that MoWEC is working to find new ways to support the growing needs of the county’s senior community.

Volunteers are also needed to help deliver meals with the routes estimated to only take one hour. Executive Director Elizabeth Johnson reported that the need is slightly lower than usual since frozen meals are being delivered due to the pandemic but the need will only increase once MOWEC returns to delivering ready-to-eat meals.

Johnson also reported that entries are being sought for the Amazing Race, which will challenge teams of two or three to solve riddles and obstacles around Erath County in a race against other teams for a trophy/cash prize.
