U.S. Representative Roger Williams, Republican, recently took the time to sit down with the Dublin Citizen and shared a bit about himself after winning the election for Texas District 25.
After redistricting, Texas District 25 will now be representing Erath County, a county Williams is extremely familiar with, as a neighbor from Weatherford.
In 2012, Williams was elected to Congress and has been the voice for Main Street America and families across the country. He served as the previous Texas Secretary of State from 2005’07.
When asked what he is most proud of accomplishing during his time in office, Williams said his 98% rating as a conservative and his car dealership in Weatherford.
“I still own a business,” he explained.
Williams is also a rancher with Black Angus cows, a part of his life that he said helps him be able to relate to his Erath County constitutes.
“It’s a real honor to be able to represent all of Erath County,” he said. “As someone who has skin in the game I can understand and relate when hay is selling for $200 a bale or when there are extreme droughts.”
Since redistricting, Williams now represents all of the county. Before the redistricting, he only represented a portion, while U.S. Representative August Pfluger represented the other part.
Currently, Williams serves on the subcommittee for the underserved, agricultural and rural business development, an aspect that helps his local constitutes.
“It helps that we are a voice for the ag industry,” he said.
One of Williams’ focuses recently has been two pieces of legislations to encourage more young people to pursue Career and Technical Education.
With 100,000 students dropping out of school in the ninth grade, Williams said he believes it’s important to give students an option for a great career without having to potential take on student debt.
“You can be a plumber or a welder or many other things and if we show that career opportunities are endless, it will help with the dropout rate,” he said.
“It’s amazing—the amount of people that are needed. If we can supply these kids in these jobs, they can make a career out of it,” he said. “We are so short of people in these jobs; it’s a great opportunity.”
As the Vice Ranking Chairman for the Small Business Committee, Williams shared a bit about how he thinks small businesses can be helped.
“The pandemic was devastating but PPE loans worked and taxpayers got a return on this investment,” he said.
Moving forward, Williams said there needs to be less regulation.
“We don’t need an additional 7,000 IRS agents,” he said.
With Border Control being a topic that all parties are discussing, Williams has gone on the record of making the ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy permanent.
“The liberal, left, socialist policiesof thisadministration have created a humanitarian and national security crisis at the border,” he said. “He’s never been to the border. He’s letting people in so they can vote illegally and the drug crisis is killing our kids. They need to rebuild the wall and stay in Mexico until they get a court date to become a U.S. citizen.”
Talking shortly after the November mid-term elections, Williams said he was mostly pleased with the way the election turned out,
