Annual rainfall lowest in a decade

Body

Dublin again had a dry year with the lowest rainfall amount in a decade occurring in 2022, with a significant drought that contributed into an extreme wildfire season.

Rainfall for Dublin, as collected and reported by the Dublin Citizen every week on page A4, was at 22.5, much lower than the 40.4 inches in 2021, lower than the 36.75 collected in 2020 and 39.75 in 2019. It is also lower than the historical average of 35.7 inches for the city.

The Old Farmers’ Almanac doesn’t predict the area to bounce back in 2023, with a hotter and drier summer than normal. Rainfall is anticipated to be average for April and May, with lower than normal rainfall in the fall.

2023 marked the lowest rainfall in a decade, followed by 23.85 inches collected in 2014 followed by 28.9 inches in 2012.

Below average rainfall contributed to significant issues with livestock and crops including a shortage on hay with higher than average hay costs.
