Ladies building on 2020 successes

Body

The Lingleville Lady Cardinals ended their 2020 season on a high note, heading into playoffs after a rocky start.

Head volleyball coach Ty Johnston reports that the team is building off those successes for a promising 2021.

One of the program’s biggest strengths is size. With 25 Lady Cardinals in the program, Lingleville was able to provide enough players for a varsity, JV and freshman teams.

Johnston has been asking around and no one remembers the last time LISD had a freshman volleyball team.

These younger players are already showing determination with Johnston commending the freshmen for ‘playing to the last point’ and several JV players battling to get into the varsity lineup.

The varsity squad boasts a lot of returners this year including four seniors.

Although the team lost its setter, they found two in senior Tessa Lueck and sophomore Brena Gage.

Johnston also reported that veterans Ivy Aikman and Jaden Vandenberg will be providing leadership and experience in the 2021 team.

Lingleville also boasts strong front row hitters this year with Johnston calling out Hannah Miller for her skills in hitting and as a good all-around player.

Johnston is also benefitting this year from the addition of assistant coach Trey McCullough, who is eager to do what needs to be done to help the team.

Johnston sees one of the year’s biggest hurdles as keeping everyone healthy in the midst of COVID quarantines.

“It’s been hard set to have full games or practice with all teams this year,” Johnston said.
