Dublin senior Lion Daniel Escobar was named the first Player of the Week for 2021 by Big Country Preps.

The regional “High School Sports Community” website noted in its pick that the athlete has “been pouring in points since the season’s outset,” a fact widely known by any Dublin Lions fan who has witnessed his speed and determination on the court as well as the way he works with his teammates.

This pick comes after the Lions moved their season record to 11-6 (3-1 in district) following a pair of wins last week.

“He had a really good week,” said Dublin Lions Coach Will Parker. “He played well this past week and if he continues to play as well [as he has this season] we’ll have a great season.”

Parker was quoted in the Big Country Preps article as saying that Escobar showed strong leadership from the beginning of the season.

“When you have a senior who is vocal in practice and setting the tone for everyone in the weight room, everyone follows suit,” Parker told Big Country Preps.

The Lions thrilled fans in the home gym with a 79-43 victory over Millsap on Friday. This followed a 69-42 away win over Eastland on Jan. 5. Escobar contributed 63 points across both the games.

The Lions were looking to increase their win record as they took on Early in an away game Tuesday night. Results of that game and Friday’s game against Brock will be printed in next Week’s Citizen.
