Martha Woods

Body

Martha Woods, 83, passed away in Austin TX, April 26, 2026. Heartland Funeral Cremations of Comanche has been entrusted with Ms Woods’ funeral arrangements. The family will greet friends 11 am Saturday May 2, 2026 at the funeral home. A graveside service will follow at 2 pm in Proctor Cemetery in Proctor, TX.

Martha was born in Pasadena, Texas to James and Corine Boase. Her parents brought their family to Rabbit Center outside Stephenville, where they lived and went to school. Martha graduated from Stephenville High School and started working before meeting and marrying Korean War veteran, Brahma bull wrangling, ranch hand Ward Woods.

Ward and Martha set up house in Proctor, where they raised their boys Jay and Zack. Martha spent these years stitching and stamping jeans, volunteering at community events, and taking care of her three men. She served as the Democratic Party precinct chair in Proctor, overseeing many local and national elections throughout the years.

She took care of many others, feeding, watching over, and hosting people who flocked to her home for her wit, her understanding and sympathetic ear, and her home cooking. She helped put her two boys through college. She loved being at the lake with friends and family, traveling, honkytonking and two-stepping.

Given her special letter writing skills, it’s no surprise that Martha went to work for the post office for a time. She also cared for people in their homes. She cared for the many animals that came her way, most recently her beloved dog Scout. A couple of years ago, Martha moved with Scout to Spicewood to spend more time with her sister.

Preceded in death by her parents, her son Jay, husband Ward, and siblings Skeet, Joe, Ruth, Robert, and Bruce, she is survived by her son Zack, sister Larue, and numerous nieces and nephews and friends.

Even when she held strong opinions, Martha could listen to anyone’s story and remain discreet, kind, and generous. She will be missed.
