Hamilton Herald-News Organizers of this year’s 50th annual Hamilton County Dove Festival and Rodeo would like for everyone to come out for a rip-roaring good time on Labor Day weekend.

The rodeo will kick off Friday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. at the Hamilton Fair Grounds Keith Curry Arena and again on Saturday.

Diamond Cross Rodeo Company will be back for the fifth year to produce the rodeo.

Bull riding, barrel racing, break away and calf roping are just a few of the exciting events taking place during this year’s rodeo.

Kids will also be able to get in on the action with mutton bustin’, calf scramble and ribbon calf events.

The admission price for adults is $15, children four to 12 are $5 and three and under are free.

Tickets can be purchased at the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, located at 108 N. Bell.

The event also includes a family 5K at 7:30 a.m. on Sept. 3, vendors and food trucks, a kids corner, a parade, a diaper dash, live music and a dance.

De Leon Free Press Matt Horner, Vice President of the DeLeon Chamber of Commerce, gave a report for Golden Saturday, a portion of the Peach and Melon Festival, stating it was a big success and economically great on many fronts.

“Norman Rockwell would have had his paintbrush out,” he said. “It was small town Americana.”

Horner, however, said the event had some bumps. Chiefly, he pointed out to what he perceived to be a lack of support from the city, including the city administrator not being in attendance.

Horner citied issues with the police chief, inadequate trash cans and road barricades as problems for the event.

“The leadership between the City Manager and the Police Chief needs to be brought up,” Horner said. “[Golden Saturday and the Peach and Melon Festival] is our pride and joy from the old timers to the young kids. It’s what glues us together. We really need to see greater leadership from the city.”

Hico News-Review Steel framing continued on another downtown building this week. This one is a new structure being built for Fort Worth developer Clay Mazur on Elm Street, across the back alley from the Grace Bible Fellowship building. Mazur said this week there were no tenants lined up for it yet and it was “just a spec building.” Mazur has purchased close to a dozen downtown area properties in the past year.

The new school year was to kick off this week for Hico ISD, with classes beginning for all grades on Wednesday, Aug. 27. New Hico Superintendent Shelli Stegall has moved up this year from the assistant superintendent post to take over following Jon Hartgraves’ retirement.
