Primaries result in local, state runoffs

A total of 6,423 (26.38%) of Erath’s registered voters cast ballots in the March 1 primaries, picking candidates and deciding several local races.

A few state races will be facing runoffs and locally, Chris Evans will be facing David Martin in a runoff for Justice of the Peace Precinct 2 after the Republican primary. Evans received 459 votes, and Martin had 355 while Darrell Curry got 281 votes and Chance Garrett had 169. There were 102 Precinct 2 voters who made no decision.

Runoffs left after the state Republican primary races include the attorney general bid, land commissioner and railroad commissioner.

Ken Paxton (42.7% of Texas votes) will be facing George P. Bush (22.8%) in the attorney general race. Paxton also led Erath voting (2,256), followed by Bush (1,820), Louie Gohmert (742) and Eva Guzman (716).

Dawn Buckingham (41.3%) is facing Tim Westley (14.7%) for land commissioner. Erath voting was led by Buckingham (1,453), Westley (1,246), Victor Avila (549), Jon Spiers (518), Don W. Minton (455), Weston Martinez (193), Rufus Lopez (116) and Ben Armenta (79).

In the railroad commissioner race, Wayne Christian (47.1%) will face Sarah Stogner (15.2%). Christian (1,625) led Erath voting followed by Tom Slocum Jr. (1,248), Stogner (704), Marvin Summers (615) and Dewayne Tipton (542).

There are also four runoffs following the Democratic primaries.

Mike Collier (41.7%) will face Michelle Beckley (30.3%) for Lt. Governor. Erath voters opted for Collier (180) followed by Carla Brailey (108) and Beckley (101).

Rochelle Mercedes Garza (41%) will face Joe Jaworski (22%) for attorney general. Garza (146) led Erath voting folowed by Jaworski (100), Mike Fields (70), Lee Merritt (53) and S. “TBONE” Raynor (19).

Janet T. Duddling (46%) is facing Angel Luis Vega (34.8%) for Comptroller of Public Accounts. Duddling (188) led Erath voting followed by Vega (117) and Tim Mahoney (75).

Sandragrace Martinez (32.1%) will be facing Jay Kleberg (25.9%) for land commissioner. Martinez (121) led Erath voting followed by Kleberg (114), followed by Jinny Suh (72) and Michael Lange (67).

Runoffs will be held May 24 with early voting starting on May 20.
