Though rain delayed the start from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Dublin ISD Band Director Ronny Luedke still reported that the first annual Harry Bradberry Marching Classic held Saturday on the Bob & Norma Cervetto Field was a big success.
Rain predictions and schedule changes resulted in two of the 12 teams bowing out but the event still drew 450 to 500 band members from 1A to 3A schools as they competed and used the experience to practice setting up and performing prior to the upcoming district competition. Luedke heard from one of the judges that they didn’t know of another event offering such an experience to smaller schools in Texas. Although Dublin elected to not compete, Luedke said the experience gave his band a chance to work out their nerves with judges remarking that the band showed significant improvements in their second performance in the evening.
He was also grateful to Brett Gibson, who provided drone footage of routines, saying that perspective is very unusual and highlights things aspects that need improvement.
Luedke said Ealry had hosted contests when he was a band director there, but he learned that a lot more went into starting one this year. He said it couldn’t have been done without the assistance of band parents and the band boosters, who were assisting bands through the schedule and gathering donations through shout outs on the score board as well as concession and a sno cone stand.
“Everybody was real complimentary of our booster clubs and kids,” Luedke said.
The Dublin Chamber of Commerce also offered a warm welcome with $5 Dublin Dollar certificates to each band member good at any Dublin Chamber member that day.
Luedke said everybody was real happy and he hopes to grow it to be even better with lessons learned this year.
