Hico News Review
Visitors on ATVs and motorcycles were spotted around Hico on Sept. 18 for a ‘poker run’ sponsored by the Hico Chamber of Commerce. Participants were able to drive to locations on country roads around the area and pick up a playing card, vying for the best hand. The event raised approximately $5,000 for the Hico Baseball Association and $500 for the Hico Volunteer Fire Department.

Hamilton Hearld-News announced the addition of award-winning journalist Wyndi Veigel as the paper’s News Editor. Veigel comes to Hamilton from Marshall where she was the editor of the Marshall News Messenger, a six-day-a-week paper. She has served on several journalism boards and won several awards, including a first place Freedom of Information award in 2021 from the Associated Press.
Jenn Gesick was announced as the new Executive Director for the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce. Gesick is a Lorena native who met her husband, Patrick while attending Texas State University. After moving to Jonesboro, she enjoyed meeting the friendly people of Hamilton, leading to her decision to volunteer with the Hamilton Main Street Program and pursue the Chamber position when it became available.
Hamilton High School senior Emma Griffin was crowned the 2021 Homecoming Queen.
Hamilton Community Center will have its fundraiser spaghetti lunch Oct. 1 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
DeLeon Free Press
The 2021 DeLeon High School Homecoming was announced with Haven Pounds and LJ Herron crowned Homecoming Quuen and King. Kathy Johnson Webb was named Coming Home Queen. Emme Gilmore was named Football Sweetheart. Band Beau and Sweetheart were Guy Ritchie and Daisy Otwell. FFA Sweetheart was Baylee Burrow. Tim Winegeart and Janki Patel were named FCCLA Beau and Sweetheart.
The Quilt Show was held this past weekend at the DeLeon Area Museum with quilts made in the 1860s to more recent pieces on display.

A historical marker was dedicated at Cora Cemetery on Sept. 18, recognizing it as the oldest cemetery in Comanche County with the first marked burial being in 1859. Preston Cox, who was instrumental in preserving the cemetery, spoke about his memories of walking through the cemetery as child to deliver food to his neighbors.
