100 years ago

August 26, 1921

W.P. Hallmark was formally “checked in” as the new postmaster of Dublin following the resignation of W.E. Abbe. Abbe tendered his resignation a few weeks before to accept the postmaster position in Roswell, New Mexico.

The Dublin School Board accepted Sept. 12 as first day of school for the 1921-1922 school year.

Construction was underway for an oil refinery by the Keystone Refining Company east of Dublin and “hardly a mile from City Hall.” The company had purchased 16.5 acres in Gorman for drilling and saw potential in Dublin for refining the product and transporting via the railways that run through town.

75 years ago

August 23, 1946

It was confirmed that the specialty acts performing in Madison Square Garden would also be performing at the Dublin Rodeo. Acts included: George Mills of Montrose, Colorado, Jack Knapp of Hollywood, California and Gene Autry with his famous horse, Champion.

50 years ago

August 25, 1971

The Dublin Hospital School of Vocational Nursing announced the graduates of the Class of 1971. They included: Donna Early, Ary Abbey, Patsy Hooks, Mary Stewart, Sammy Jones, Ruby Diggs and Hilda Swindle, who earned the high scholastic achievement award.

Denver Doggett, Jr. and Tommy Brooks of Dublin won second place in team competition in the golf tournament at Lakewood Recreation Center, Cisco.

25 years ago

August 22, 1996

Due to a large showing of community support, the Dublin Historical Society raised $35,000 in a 90-day period to secure the purchase of the old Dublin Progress building to relocate the Dublin Historical Museum. Knights of Pythias promised $5,000 if the remaining funds were raised by the end of August.

Final paperwork was being prepared for the purchase of the old Dublin Hospital building by Bill Johnson and Keith Nichols. Representatives of Harris Methodist Erath County Hospital presented the Dublin Industrial Foundation with a check for $20,000 in relation to the building’s sale as the bid is reportedly higher than Harris Methodist needed. Johnson suggested the gift to the DIF instead of decreasing the bid.
