Many Dublin mothers pleaded with readers to forgo shooting off fireworks for the holiday to prevent upsetting their sons who had recently returned from overseas. “That is not so much to ask when you think that those moments of fun for you serve only as a grim reminder of war to battlescarred veterans.” The story continues “Let us make this a happy and carefree Christmas for boys who are maybe home for the first time in several years. While many boys were prisoners and in battles for their lives, they were there for you – now let’s go all out for them and try to make this a quiet and peaceful Christmas – one that they have been looking forward to.”
