The county has approved the purchase of a new building in downtown to house its juvenile probation office.

At the special called Friday, May 8 meeting, Erath County Commissioners unanimously approved the purchase (contingent on the appraisal) of a building for $525,000 located across at 240 West Green Street in Stephenville across from the Stephenville Police Department.

The county has been utilizing a rented house for its location on North Graham since 2011, currently at a cost of $1,900 a month.

Purchasing the property will allow the county to have more of an investment that they can sell in the future if they need to instead of renting, the county said.

During the regularly scheduled commissioners court, action was taken to allow the tax office to engage with MVBA (the county’s tax attorneys) to help correct a property deed that was done in error upon a tax sale.

A donation for a vehicle kit was made by Billy McMinn for the Erath County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Matt Coates explained than a deputy bent their vehicle kit getting a child out of a locked vehicle, and when discovering this, the grandfather wished to replace the kit for the department.

The board also approved applying for and entering into a memo of understanding for the Community Wildfire Defense Grant (CWDG) with the purpose of developing a community wildfire protection plan ( CWPP).

The Monday meeting was presided over by Commissioner Dee Stephens since County Judge Brandon Huckabee was away in Washington D.C. discussing county business with legislators and participating in Commissioner Court Leadership Academy with VG Young Institute of County Government, Texas AgriLife Extension Agency.

Commissioners Court meets the 2nd and 4th Monday on the second floor of the Erath County Courthouse.
