Lions statebound as girls medal

DHS is sending one Lions to the state powerlifting contest on the heels of several ladies placing high (and even breaking a record) in state competition last week.

Luis Elicerio is heading into state competition Thursday, March 26 in Abilene after placing second in the SHW class at Regionals in Decatur with a total lift of 1,320 pounds.

Four DHS girls competed in state competition in Edinburg Thursday, March 20 with three medaling.

Senior Cassidy Adair, making her fourth consecutive state appearance, placed second in the 198 with a total lift of 1,045 (just 15 pounds shy of first place). She broke a state record in the heavyweight platforms as she lifted 310 pounds in the bench press.

Freshman Jessa Bamber placed third in the 97 with a total lift of 565. Bayli Jackson placed 5th in the 242+ with a total lift of 865.

They were joined by fellow qualifier Candy Rodriguez in her second state appearance. She lifted at total of 815 in the 181 class.

The coaching staff expressed pride in all the girls who competed at state while powerlifting coach John Ward called out coach Hannah Smith for doing a “great job in getting the girls ready all year.”

“I couldn’t be more proud of this group,” said Smith of the quartet. “Their grit, growth and the way they supported one another all season made this a truly special year for Dublin powerlifting.”
