Melissa Sanchez Ferguson is seeking election for Justice of the Peace for Precincts, 1,3 and 4, and brings experience of working as a clerk for JP offices to the table.
“My experience working as a clerk for the Justice of the peace ignited a strong commitment to public service. Through this role, I discovered my passion for serving the community and ensuring the fair and consistent application of the law,” she said. “I am committed to making Erath County a better place for its residents by treating every individual with respect and fairness and by upholding the law with integrity in every case that comes through the justice court.”
Ferguson’s educational background includes an associates in Criminal Justice from Midland College, bachelors in Criminology from the University of Texas of the Permian Basis. She also worked for the current Justice of the Peace Precinct 1,3,4 in Erath County from April 2024 until July 2025.
Ferguson said one of the primary challenges in the county at the JP level was a failure to fully implement updated legislation and establish procedures.
“The lack of implementation has a direct impact on the residents of Erath County, many of whom remain unaware of how these issues affect their daily lives,” she said. “It is essential that the presiding judge possess a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of the office, including a working knowledge of the duties of the clerk and the ability to perform those functions, when necessary, to ensure compliance, continuity, and effective service to the public.”
If elected, Ferguson said one of her immediate priorities will be the implementation of the juvenile diversion program that was scheduled to take effect in January 2025.
“I am also committed to ensuring that all cases are handled thoroughly and appropriately at every stage to improve outcomes and reduce the number of appeals sent to the County Court at Law. In addition, I will focus on strengthening the Justice of the Peace office by supporting staff, improving workplace stability, and reducing employee turnover. Also recognizing experienced and well-supported employees are essential to an efficient and affective justice system,” she said.
Ferguson said her academic background in criminal justice and criminology, along with the hands-on experience as a court clerk are vital strengths to help her achieve her goals, if elected.
“I approach my work with honesty and humility, knowing when to seek additional information to get the correct answers. The Justice of the Peace Court is often a person’s first interaction with the judicial system, making it essential that cases are handled correctly, fairly, and professionally. I have learned from respected colleagues and mentors who share a common goal and commitment to public service. Together, we will work to strengthen our justice system and our community,” she said.
Ferguson is a member of the Cross Timbers Republican Women’s Club and has been married to her husband Mike Ferguson since 2018. They have two children, Rylee, 8 and Tucker, 5.
Ferguson stated that Erath County’s greatest strength lies in the dedicated public servants who understand their roles and carry them out with integrity within the community.
“Our district and county judges exemplify professionalism and expertise, bringing extensive knowledge, fairness, and a commitment to justice. Equally important are the clerks who support our judges and attorneys; their efficiency, accuracy, and institutional knowledge are vital to the effective operation of our courts. Together, these professionals ensure justice is administered thoughtfully, consistently, and in the best interest of the people they serve. Their dedication strengthens public trust and reflects the values that define Erath County,” she said.
