Dale Spurlen, a retired TxDOT employee, is seeking election for Precinct 2 county commissioner, and is running to bring practical and responsible leadership to the county. Spurlen is running against incumbent Albert Ray and challenger David Bays.

“I believe in listening to residents, managing resources wisely, and making decisions that improve quality of life across our county – now and for the future,” he said.

Spurlen’s education includes graduating from Eastland High in 1979, earning his associates in farm and ranch management in 1981 from TSTC, and his bachelors in agriculture operations in 1993 from Tarleton State University. He retired from TxDOT after 23 years of employment and currently works with Comanche County Precinct 2. Spurlen said there are several issues facing the county including infrastructure, responsible growth and fiscal accountability. “Maintaining roads and bridges – especially in rural areas – is essential for safety, emergency response and economic activity. As the county grows, development must be planned responsibly so it does not outpace available services or strain taxpayers,” Spurlen said. “Transparency and efficient use of taxpayer dollars are also critical to maintaining public trust. As county commissioner, I will focus on practical solutions, long-term planning, and putting the needs of Erath County residents first.”

Within the past 12 months, Spurlen has kept up with commissioners court in the news and online, since he works on Mondays when commissioners court is held. However, he attended January’s meeting and will attend February’s as well.

If elected, Spurlen wants to promote transparency and open communication so residents will feel informed and heard.

“Supporting public safety and county employees is also a priority, as they play a vital role in serving our community. Above all, my goal is to work collaboratively to make practical, long-term decisions that protect Erath County’s rural values while preparing for future growth,” he said.

Spurlen said his experience with TxDOT and Comanche County aids in his experience of roadway construction, rehabilitation and maintenance. He also holds a CDL with all endorsements other than hazmat and brings business education and practical experience through owning and operating a small farm as well as working for small businesses as part of his career.

Over the years, Spurlen has been involved with the DeLeon Peach and Melon festival, Troop 37 Boy Scout Leader, DeLeon and Comanche County Youth Livestock, DeLeon Baseball Association and State Director of Texas Shorthorn Association.

He is supported in his run for county commissioner by his family including his wife of 37 years Laura, their three children and their spouses – Waggoner and Felicia Spurlen, Desire’ and Todd Bearden and Layne and Tori Spulen, eight grandchildren with one more on the way.

Spurlen and his wife have lived in the Victor/ Highland Community since 1988, and purchased their own place in 1995 where they have a small cow/calf herd.

They joined Highland Baptist Church in 1990 and their kids were raised attending there.

“Erath County’s greatest strength are its people, strong work ethic and sense of community. Our agricultural roots, combined with steady economic growth and the presence of Tarleton State University, provide both stability and opportunity,” Spurlen said. “The county’s strategic location and well-established infrastructure support local businesses while preserving our rural way of life. Just as important are the dedicated county employees, first responders, and volunteers who serve our residents every day. These strengths give Erath County a solid foundation for responsible growth and a strong future.”
