A burn ban is now in effect for the next 90 days after it was put in place by the Erath County Commissioners Monday, Sept. 22.
Erath County Fire Marshal Tommy Shelton told the commissioners Monday that the drought index was 605, or abnormally dry.
In the past week the entire area has seen an uptick in grass fires.
On Sunday, Sept. 21 multiple agencies dealt with a large fire involving a structure and 25 acres on 2156 and Hwy. 16.
A lightning fire was also reported in the 3400 block of CR 299 on Sept. 21. A grass fire was reported in the 2300 block of East Hwy. 6 when a controlled burn got out of control.
On Sept. 18, Erath County Volunteer Fire Department along with Huckabay and Morgan Mill Volunteer Fire Departments reported they were on the scene of a wildland fire on CR 471 for about six hours.
