A 14-year-old juvenile was arrested Friday, Sept. 12 on charges of unlawful carry of a weapon in prohibited places – weapon free zone after bringing a firearm to the Dublin Varsity football game.
The charge is a 2nd degree felony.
According to information released by the Dublin Police Department and Dublin ISD, the administration was alerted to the juvenile being in possession of a weapon and they immediately notified on-duty officers with DPD.
Within seconds, officers and administrators located the student, recovered the weapon, and placed the juvenile under arrest.
“I truly appreciate our local police department and our administrative team for responding swiftly and with meticulous attention to detail to keep everyone safe,” Superintendent Melissa Summers said.
The student was transported to the juvenile detention facility, and due to laws pertaining to juveniles, the name and identity is not being released.
Out of an abundance of caution, the Dublin Police Department and Dublin Independent School District will be meeting to review safety protocols and security operations during extracurricular events.
“We want to reassure our community that there will continue to be a School Resource Officer on every Dublin ISD campus during regular school times. On behalf of the Dublin Police Department and Dublin Independent School District, we want the community to know that student safety remains our number one priority,” Police Chief Cameron Ray said. “We would like to thank vigilant community members for promptly coming forward and reporting their concerns. This incident serves as an important reminder: if you see something, say something.”
Ray said the department is currently working with the ATF and other federal agencies to determine where the firearm was purchased, who was legally supposed to be in possession of it and how the juvenile got into possession of it.
“We will hold anyone involved criminally responsible for their actions. We are grateful for the vigilance of the people who reported this and are blessed that nothing serious took place,” Ray said.
