After 15 years of service as mayor and on council, Stephenville Mayor Doug Svien has resigned from office citing health reasons.

Svien submitted his resignation, effective immediately via letter, Wednesday, July 30.

The mayor, who suffered a stroke in February 2025, said while he continues to focus on his recovery that he believes it is in the best interest for both his health and the city council that he stepped down at this time.

“I have full confidence in Mayor Pro Tem David Baskett and his ability to lead the council in my absence. I’ve had the privilege of working closely with David since he was elected, and I’ve seen firsthand his growth, dedication, and deep love for this community. He has my full support. Thank you, David, for your friendship and for everything we have accomplished together," he wrote.

The city council placed the mayor's seat on the November ballot, and two individuals have already filed for the seat: Baskett and city councilmember Lonn Reismann.

The mayor also thanked a number of individuals including city staff and colleagues.

“To my colleagues on the city council: thank you. It has been a true pleasure to work alongside each of you. You are dedicated and loyal citizens who sacrifice countless hours of your personal and family time in service to this community. It has been an honor to serve you,” he wrote.

Svien added that his life and service had been simple.

“I really, really enjoyed what I did,” he said.
