Wildfire Mitigation and Prevention Program

This is a program everyone should consider making.

We are currently in the D1 (moderate drought) stage of drought, and the outlook is for the drought to persist at least for the next few months. Originally, the National Weather Service (NWS) was predicting for us to move out of this dry spell late spring early summer and into a more normal rainfall pattern or at least not below average rainfall.

This information had me feeling optimistic that we might have a good summer, but they have now revised their predictions and have us listed as having 35 to 50% chance of below normal participation throughout the summer.

We are already experiencing one of the driest winter and springs we have seen in a very long time. We usually at least have a little March moisture to green things up, but if you have looked around there is not much green out there. The NWS miss their predictions as often as they get them right, I sure hope they are off on this one. But even in a fair year summer rainfall is pretty sparse, so it is not hard to predict a dry summer.

We are lucky that the lake is at least still near full.

I lead off with all this negativity as a way of encouraging you to attend this meeting to help you prepare for and hopefully help prevent wildfires and damage to your homes, farms and ranches.

We will have some of the top experts on hand to discuss practices that will help make your homes and ranches more resilient to the effects of potential wildfires. There will also be some discussion on how to report your losses should you have losses to wildfire.

The program will be held on Monday, April 14th from 10:00 AM until 12:00 AM at the Comanche Community Center, 101 Indian Creek Drive and we will have a good lunch following the program at 12:00. Lunch is sponsored by your good local Texas Farm Bureau office and there is no charge for the program. This will be a good program with some very useful information whether you live in town or in the country. If you have questions or would like to RSVP, please call the county extension office at: 325-356-2539.
