Garden Club learns about H2O

Body

The Dublin Garden Club held its Oct. 9 meeting in the home of Denise Weems.Guest speaker was Texas Master Naturalist, Peggy Tolboom. Peggy spoke on water including sources, usage, habitat , environmental issues, sewage processes. Texas has 12 major river basins. Erath County is a part of Brazos River Basin. Texas also has several aquifers. Erath County sits over the Trinity aquifer. Glen Rose and Paluxy aquifers feed into the Trinity. Limestone, sand and gravel make up the aquifer natural filtration systems. Water is stored in lakes, rivers, ponds and the aquifers. After rains the water moves underground thru the soil or across the land surface as runoff. This feeds the lakes, aquifers, etc. for storage areas. Pesticides and fertilizers can also travel with water absorption and runoff. That is why it is critical to only use the amount listed on the label of these products.

A few ways we can help with the water supply; don't water more than needed, keep water use on your property (no runoff), don't overuse fertilizers and pesticides, don't flush wipes.

The next meeting will be Nov. 13 at Texas Sage. Dublin Floral will provide the program.

The club meets the second Wednesday of each month with guest speakers.

The club invites everyone to join them. Please contact President Mary Howard at 254-977-3686 for more information.
