Garden club learns about soil health

Body

The Dublin Garden Club held its fall kickoff meeting Sept. 11 in the home of Denise Weems.

Guest speaker was local business owner of Bradberry’s Best, Paul Bradberry. Paul gave an informative presentation on soil health, ph levels in the soil and how to amend, organic and non-organic fertilizers, composting, and resource information. Paul stated the gardening book, Guide to Gardening by Neil Sperry was a wonderful resource book that Paul highly recommends. Also, use the fertilizer in amounts given on the label. More is not better and is harmful. Compost is not fertilizer. Compost feeds the microbes in the soil. This makes for healthy soil that does not need as much fertilizer. The three items that organic controls not effective are; fire ants, grasshoppers and grass burrs. Of course, we have all three in abundance in Texas. Otherwise, organic controls work on all other issues in the garden.

The club discussed their annual Christmas Tour of Homes. We have a couple homes lined up. Follow-up is required. Several possible homes were discussed. Different club members are to pursue these possible homes before their next meeting.

Their next meeting will be Oct. 9, at Texas Sage. Judy Lunsford is hosting. The club’s guest speaker will be Peggy Tolboom. Peggy is a Texas Master Naturalist and a wonderful presenter.

The club meets the second Wednesday of each month and has a guest speaker each month. We invite you to join us. Please contact President Mary Howard at 254-9773686 for more information.
