Jan. 6, 1922

Drilling began again on the Sides Well No. 1, three miles southeast of DeLeon. Some gas had been found at about the level where the drill stood. The well was down 2, 660 feet on a formation of black lime.

Thomas Onzo, who claimed the record for longest hike, spoke in the streets of Dublin after a 241-day journey from San Francisco, California to Portland, Maine. He was on his return journey when he passed through Dublin and was to claim a $2,000 reward from the Pacific Coast Sporting Club for breaking the record.

75 years ago

Jan. 10, 1947

Deposits recorded by the Dublin National Bank in December topped the $4 million mark for the first time in the bank’s history.

The Dublin Development Luncheon Club elected the following new officers: President Francis Perry, Vice President Joe Kennedy, 2nd Vice President Joe Fletcher, Secretary W.H. Prescott, Assistant Secretary Dale Harbin, Bull Regulator Baxter Burr and Assistant Bull Regulator Roy Branum.

The official temperature for Dublin on Jan. 4 was one degree fahrenheit, significantly lower than usual.

Jan. 6, 1972

Classes had been cancelled at Dublin High School due to icy weather.

Alan Traweek and Paul Warner were named All-Area by the Abilene Reporter-News.

Jan. 9, 1997

A Jan. 1 merger of the First National Bank of Dublin with the DeLeon, Gustine and North branches of First State Bank was to expand services across the four locations.
