April 29, 1921

Photos of Dublin students who won county championship honors were featured on the front page of the Dublin Progress and Telephone. Winners included: Florine Long and Virginia Linn (girls debate); James Beadel and Cecil Fewell (boys debate); Mildred McGee (senior girls declamation) and Walter Foust (senior boys declamation, 2nd place).

75 years

April 26, 1946

Col. Doyle R. Yardley was killed accidentally while cleaning a rifle on April 23, 1946. After rabbit hunting, Yardley was cleaning his rifle when it discharged. He was shot through the lung and he died almost instantly. Yardley was a member of the 509th Parachute Infantry (joining the military in 1941) and a former prisoner of war of the Germans after he was injured and captured in Italy. He remained a prisoner of war for 17 months in Poland before escaping while German guards moved prisoners to another camp.

50 years

April 29, 1971

Dublin native Carroll Read and his wife, Patricia, became the first husband and wife to graduate with their Ph.D’s during the same commencement ceremony from Texas A&M. Carroll received his Ph.D in genetics and Patricia received her Ph.D in plant breeding. A photo of the couple sitting by a microscope was placed on the front page.

April 25, 1996

Sikes Movieland was advertising new movies that were available for the whole family. New films that were in were Bridges for Madison County, Steal Big, Steal Little, To Die For (a 1995 film), Waiting to Exhale and the Aristocats. Sikes Movieland was open seven days a week and open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
