The Dublin community is invited to celebrate the life of one of its strongest volunteers and advocates as a memorial service is set for Mike Weems on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Patrick Street Church of Christ.
Weems died peacefully at the age of 72 on Sept. 14 following an extended stay in an El Paso hospital after getting in a motorcycle accident.
Although Weems claimed long family ties to Dublin, he first moved to town in 2004 with his wife, Denise and daughter, Whitney.
He acted as the city’s Code Enforcement Officer for six years before his retirement in 2013.
Even following his retirement, he continued to serve the local area and its people as a longtime member of the Dublin Volunteer Fire Department, the Dublin Lions Club, as a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) advocate for children and as a volunteer for the Disabled American Veterans group.
Weems was a veteran who wore three different uniforms throughout his service as a member of the National Guard, a Navy Corpsman and as hospital corpsman attached to the Echo 2/5 Marines and deployed in Vietnam. It was this last post that earned him the nickname Doc Weems.
Weems was originally raised in Lovington, New Mexico, but lived in San Diego, Calif. Prior to moving to Dublin. It was there that he raised his other two daughters, Kristen and Cindy. A second memorial service is planned for San Diego later this year so that his friends and family there can recognize Weems full life of service and friendship.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to DAV (Disabled Veterans) or to CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), two worthy organizations that Mike volunteered to support.
