September marks Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and for Rylan Strong Network and Servant Souls RC Erath it marks an important time to pay tribute to those who are fighting or who have fought cancer.
Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children. If we believe that our children are as precious as gold – the color of ribbon that symbolizes childhood cancer - that fact alone should be a motivator to act. But today, research for pediatric cancer lags decades behind adult research and the U.S. government allocates less than 4% of its research funding to cancers that affect children.
For those unfamiliar with Rylan Strong Network, it’s named for Rylan Pruitt who was diagnosed with Medullomyoblastoma on May 26, 2021. He was the 51st known case of this type of pediatric brain cancer. (To date, there is only one known survivor.)
Rylan courageously fought a 10-month battle, and won that fight in his own way, gaining his wings, March 10, 2022. His battle against cancer has led to the creation of the Rylan Strong Network by his dad, Mike Pruitt.
This Saturday, Sept. 7, the community has the chance to come show their support for those battling cancer and those who have already fought cancer at the Dublin Public Library with Rylan’s Colors for Courage hosted by Servant Souls RC Erath.
The event will allow anyone who wants to create their own sidewalk art to do so from 8 a.m. to noon. Chalk will be provided and donations will be accepted. All proceeds go to the Rylan Strong Network.
In October, the Rylan Strong Network will host more fundraising events including its major annual fundraiser Wheels of Hope.
