The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will hold an event dedicated to everything peaches on July 30 in San Angelo.
The cost is $30 for the event, which will run from 1-5 p.m. at the Tom Green County 4-H Center, 3168 N. U.S. Hwy 67.

AgriLife Extension horticulturist Allison Watkins and AgriLife Extension family and community health agent Courtney Redman, both of San Angelo, will lead the event.
Everything’s peachy
“Peaches are one of the most loved summer fruits and we wanted to highlight them with a workshop that covers everything from planting and growing to harvesting and preserving,” Watkins said. “We will make two fun recipes too.”
Although there are over 1 million peach trees in Texas, making it the state’s leading deciduous fruit crop, successfully planting and growing peaches can be tricky. The workshop will cover what people need to know in terms of how and when to plant. Care of peach trees will also be discussed.
Certain cultivars also fair better in certain parts of Texas. The workshop will cover those that do best in the Concho Valley area, as well as how planting dates vary by species and the difference between bare root and container planting.
The other half of the workshop will teach how to can and preserve peaches, as well as give participants the opportunity to learn some peach-based recipes.
“We will be talking about high- and low-acid foods for home canning and preserving,” Redman said. “Participants will dive in with a hands-on workshop, which will provide home canning and preservation tips, recipes and a jar of each recipe they make. They will make a zesty peach BBQ sauce and low-sugar peach preserves to take home.”
